RSU hoops star is enthusiastic poet

By Erica Taylor
and Josh Haley

Deveric Taylor is an RSU athlete with a lot to say.

On the court, the 6-2 junior guard, Taylor is known for his sharp 3-point shooting for the RSU basketball team.

Off the court, Taylor has an interest and talent in writing poetry.

“Writing poems relaxes me and helps me escape from everyday stress,” said Taylor. “My poems are based off of my real life situations and it is the best way for me to express myself.”
Taylor does not make it a point to hide his hobby, but most people are unaware of his niche for poetry.

“I do not mind sharing my work with others and I have even written poems specifically for friends and family members,” said Taylor.

The Dallas, Texas native’s poetry writing began when he was a freshman in high school and has stuck with him ever since.

He says he uses poetry to express his thoughts and emotions.

“My style of poetry is heartfelt. It usually comes from a personal experience,” said Taylor. “It’s deep and I try to make my words very visual.”

Though just a hobby of his, Taylor said he writes all the time and has even performed his poetry on stage. He hopes for those reading his poems to understand his purpose and feel a connection with him through his writing.

“My desire to write poetry has stemmed from my love for music,” he said

Taylor is influenced by poetry artist such as Langston Hughes, including R&B recording artist Lauryn Hill, and Hip-Hop artist Common, both who are known not only for their music but for their unique style of poetry as well.

When it comes to basketball though, Taylor is the one doing the inspiring. The soon to be senior is a two time all-conference performer and was named the 2009-10 defensive player of the year in the conference. Most recently he was voted to the NAIA All-American team.

A transfer from Northern Arizona, Taylor’s fiery play has made him a fan favorite for the Hillcats the last two seasons.

He led the nation in three point percentage in 2008-09 as the top ranked Hillcats finished with an incredible 30-2 record and captured the conference championship.

Taylor is expected to return for his senior season in 2010-11 as RSU men’s basketball will have its third coach in four years.
