Katie Navarro, incumbent student government president, called it the closest race for president in SGA history.

Adrean Shelly, a freshman and SGA senator, defeated junior Josh Mulanax, this year’s treasury officer, for 2010 SGA president by just one vote.

Shelly will assume the position this fall.

Also this month, the Student Veteran’s Association was approved by the SGA while approval of the Pep Band organization was delayed until the organization’s constitution could be made in line with the SGA constitution.

Presenters said there is a dire need for the Student Veteran’s Association to “provide a place for student veterans to congregate and share their experiences” because the number of veteran’s at RSU’s campus has increased to over 250 this semester from 53 last year.

Also this month, Parliamentarian Annette Lopez introduced a resolution to restructure the SGA from a single body to two bodies, one dealing with finances and another dealing with legislation. Although she said if the SGA approved it, it would go to a student-wide vote before being implemented, the SGA voted to postpone the vote until August.

Lopez said most university SGAs have bicameral legislatures.

The SGA passed one resolution in April. During SGA elections, only one person will touch the votes to count them, and will be supervised by student affairs staff. Previously, many people touched the votes during the counting process.

Also at the meetings, $831.45 was allotted to the student paintball group for a paintball reenactment of D-Day. $600 was allotted to the Psychology Club’s Barbeque this month, and $400 each went to the SGA executive board for t-shirts and the Nursing Association.
